Our Story


Hazell Bros was founded in 1944 by brothers Donald and Rowley Hazell as a transport business operating in Southern Tasmania. In the 1950s, Hazell Bros became involved in earthmoving projects and by the 1970s a civil construction arm began. Over the next 30 years the business continued to expand throughout Tasmania adding quarries, concrete batch plants, a commercial building business and a crane company to the portfolio. In 2010, Hazell Bros expanded into Victoria and Queensland acquiring civil construction and plant hire operations and in 2013, was awarded a long term contract with Nyrstar Port Pirie (SA) for materials handling and dust suppression activities.

Hazell Bros remains a family owned and operated business with second generation brothers Geoffrey, Managing Director, and Robert Hazell,  owning and heading up operations. Throughout its 75+ year history Hazell Bros has diversified its operations and business offerings to meet the prevailing economic conditions. Our core business functions today are Civil Construction, Quarries, Concrete, Construction Material Testing, Plant Hire, Transport, Asset Servicing and Industrial Services.

Our 700-strong team of employees are the mainstay of the business and their diversity provides Hazell Bros with the skills to ensure we continually add value and exceed our clients’ expectations. Backed by our training and development programs, our people are committed to working safely and upholding the culture based on family values and initiative. With a large privately owned fleet of vehicles, plant and equipment, plus extensive quarry and product interests, Hazell Bros enjoys a longstanding reputation for reliability in providing service solutions and the supply of quality products and materials.

There is nothing more important at Hazell Bros than having our workforce return home in a fit and healthy state at the end of every working day. Safety 1st Always Works is more than a slogan, it is the cornerstone of our safety culture.

During Worksafe Month (October 2014 ) Hazell Bros was awarded the “Best Workplace Health and Safety Management System”. The award recognises excellence demonstrated in the commitment to continuous improvement of work health and safety through the implementation of an integrated systems approach. Our submission was judged by a panel of industry and safety experts from the WorkCover Tasmania Board and WorkSafe Tasmania. This is validation of the effort of our entire business to ensure a safer system and safer place of work.

Maintaining a strong safety culture requires reinforcement, training, monitoring, inspections and most of all the commitment of all employees to care for and look after their fellow workers.
In January 2015 we were pleased to have our Federal Safety Accreditation extended for a further 6 years, testament to our strong commitment to safety over the past three years.
