We are also the proud recipients of awards for our focus on the environment at our Leslie Vale Quarry.  In 2013  Hazell Bros won the Institute of Quarrying Australia – Industry Recognition Awards – Volvo Environment Award –  Endemic Site Rehabilitation of the Hazell Bros Leslie Vale Quarry and the Cement Concrete & Aggregates Australia Tasmania Environment Health & Safety Awards – Environmental Innovation Award – for the same work.

This work involved the rehabilitation of disturbed areas of the quarry site.   The rehabilitation involved collecting seeds from endemic species onsite and propagating them in a custom-built nursery made out of recycled materials sourced from Hazell Bros construction sites. In using endemic species, the success rate is improved as the plants are common to the area and ensures all rehabilitation works are improvements to the natural habitat. Recycled glass produced at the Quarry was used in the soil mix for propagation and all irrigation for the nursery comes from rainwater tanks. The planting design is laid out to restrict air pollution to an area that is controlled. The seedlings also reduce erosion, weed establishment, conserve soil moisture and add nutrients to the soil.

In addition in 2011 Hazell Bros won the Institute of Quarrying Australia – Industry Recognition Awards – Volvo Environment Award  for Developing Markets for Recycled Glass.

We also won the EPA Sustainability Award for 2014.
